The Real Root Cause of Chronic Suffering
Here's the problem: The mind is the right tool for dealing with affairs of the mind (thoughts, concepts and beliefs), but it's the wrong tool for dealing with affairs of the body (sensations, feelings and emotions). So, when an uncomfortable feeling arises in the belly or the chest, the mind doesn't know what to do with it, so it buries it, numbs it, or distracts us from it. That's why we reach for food, alcohol, a cigarette, a phone, another workout, another hour of TV or doom scrolling.
These avoidance strategies don't solve anything - they just keep us trapped in our heads, running away from what needs to be felt, but "the body keeps the score". So, what began as a short-term avoidance strategy, repeated over decades, builds up and festers into chronic conditions like insomnia, anxiety, fatigue or pain. The nervous system gets stuck on high alert, and the mind becomes more and more overloaded as it tries to solve or avoid everything the body is trying to communicate via sensations, feelings and emotions.
When the mind tries to control every aspect of our lives, it feels helpless and becomes overwhelmed. So, it ignores the subtle messages and warnings that the body and heart are trying to send. But when those warnings get ignored for long enough, they have no choice but to grow louder and louder in a desperate attempt to be seen, heard or felt. So, what began as a mild feeling of stress eventually grows into a chronic illness.
Why the Mind Can't Fix This Alone
When the nervous system becomes dysregulated - a state sometimes called nervous system illness - the body is stuck in a cycle it can't exit without targeted support.The answer isn't more thinking. It isn't more analysis, more cognitive reframing, or more mental health interventions that treat the mind as both the problem and the solution. We have three highly specialised tools in the toolbox of our consciousness, and real healing requires us to use the right one for each job:
- The mind is the right tool for thinking, planning and problem solving.
- The heart is the right tool for feeling and processing emotions.
- The body is the right tool for sensing physical experience.
When we spend almost all of our time in one of these three (the head), the whole system falls out of balance. The nervous system becomes hyper-aroused, which manifests as stress, anxiety, panic and/or heightened pain sensitivity. And when that hyper-arousal becomes unsustainable, the system has no choice but to shut down into hypo-arousal, which typically manifests as depression, burnout and/or chronic fatigue.
The answer is simply coming back into the body, and feeling what has been buried there for decades. Our nervous system doesn't respond to thoughts - it only settles when we bring presence and awareness back into the body. Awareness isn't thinking about the body; it's a deeper aspect of consciousness that can observe thoughts, feelings and sensations without getting caught up in them. Presence is simply embodied awareness - being genuinely present with whatever is arising in the mind, heart and body, without trying to fix or analyse it."
It's only through this kind of whole-person reconnection that we can find a way out of the mess an overwhelmed, ill-equipped mind has created. That reconnection - and the deep, lasting healing it makes possible - is exactly what Neurosoma exists to support. While NESA therapy works at the neurological level, somatic psychological therapy works to gently exploring and releasing the emotional patterns, trauma responses and psychological habits that keep the nervous system locked in stress. Used together, they address both dimensions of nervous system dysregulation simultaneously.
